Program Background 

Good Shepherd Programme Kitale is a ministry of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd Sisters whose main mission is to minister to the women, girls, and children whose condition in life cries out for the healing and merciful love of Jesus the Good Shepherd with the aim of empowering them to become the people God created them to be. Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd Sisters are an international Congregation of women, deeply rooted in the Spirit and Mission of Jesus the Shepherd, who healed the sufferings, brought liberty to the captives and proclaimed the Good News of reconciliation and peace to the poor.

Concerned by the immense suffering of vulnerable in the society, Our Lady of Charity of Good Shepherd Sisters have responded through diverse programs whose main mission is to minister to the women, girls, and children whose condition in life cries out for the healing and merciful love of Jesus the Good Shepherd with the aim of empowering them to become the people God created them to be.Towardsthis mission,the Eastern Central Africa Province (ECAP)have initiated and implements grassroot programmes whose objectives are holistic empowerment of women and children.

The Good Shepherd Programme Kitale iscurrently implementing projects aimed at women, children, and youth empowerment in Kitale informal settlements of Kipsongo and Jamanoor.Good Shepherd Programme Kitale work is highly recognized and appreciated by the women, youth and children in the communities of Kipsongo and Jamanoor. The Programmehas adopted highly consultative and participatory approaches in implementing her programmes.

 The main projects that are run under the program include the following: 

Hekima Child Development Centre

Activities include:

  • Train parents and teachers on childcare and development 
  • Document all children in a centralized database and regularly update it. 
  • Initiate a mentorship program to include annual retreats, identification of mentors/counselors, linking children with mentors, etc. 

Strong Women-focused community institutions empowerment

  • Develop (or adapt) a training curriculum and manual for SHG institutional development.  
  • Carry out participatory analysis with SHGs on needs identification, planning, implementation, and monitoring 

Food vouchers project

  • Aimed which cushioned the beneficiary households from the economic turmoil occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.
